Ray Manzarek, legendary keys player of The Doors died on Monday from bile duct cancer. He was 74 years old.
Ray, a founding member of The Doors had a style of music that was a perfect match for the sullen Jim Morrison. Not having a bass player, Ray would play a piano bass while playing a combo organ at the same time. His ability to solo with immense feeling was unmatched by any keys player, in my opinion, ever. His style had a great mix of blues, psychedelic rock, and mood music.
Here is a perfect example of his amazing solos in this live version of ‘Light My Fire’ at the Hollywood Bowl in 1968..
